New York and Chicago... Get Ready!
Normally, I would shep nakhes about someone else and technically, that’s half true for this edition. However, it’s also a personal one, because brilliant Yiddishist and Yiddish teacher Reyzl Zylberman and I are coming to Chicago and New York! We will be running a few activities whilst there, including lectures and a family Yiddish activity at Lincoln Park Zoo. We can’t wait to share about Sholem Aleichem College and its Yiddish program!

Monash University Yiddish Winter Intensive
For those that have always wanted to learn Yiddish but struggle to find the time, Monash University has heard you! This July, the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation at Monash University will host the Jacob Kronhill Yiddish Winter Intensive - two weeks of immersive Yiddish language learning.
As the media release explains, “the intensive model creates an immersive environment that greatly accelerates learning. Beginner students quickly gain proficiency in comprehending, speaking, reading and writing Yiddish. Advanced students rapidly extend their Yiddish knowledge, fluency and creative expression. All students also gain cultural fluency through in-depth exploration of Yiddish literature (in Yiddish and in translation) and intensive study of Yiddish history, culture, theatre, film and contemporary Yiddish life. The program is rounded out with participation in theatre workshops and community activities.”
Having been taught by teachers running this intensive course, I can say that I am very jealous of the lucky students who enrol. Whether you are new to Yiddish or need to refresh your grammar game, this is a wonderful opportunity not to be missed!

‘Yiddish New York’ is coming...
As if New York City couldn’t get any better, it will become home once again this December to Yiddish New York, the largest Yiddish culture festival in the United States. Yiddish New York is a celebration of all things Yiddish related and includes a range of workshops, concerts and lectures - a yidishist’s dream! This year’s faculty includes some brilliant minds and performers, including Michael Alpert, Paul ‘Hershl’ Glezer, Itzik Gottesman, Daniel Kahn, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett and Michael Wex. With Yiddish language classes, kids and teens sessions, klezmer music workshops and a wide range of lectures, how could you go wrong? If you’re anywhere near New York this December, make it your business to get to Yiddish New York and check it out.
Holidaying in Greece in Yiddish? Yes Please!
If someone told me I could sit by the turquoise waters of Greece, soaking in my ancient surroundings, all whilst being on a Yiddish program, I’d ask ‘where do I sign up?’ Well, there’s no more ‘ifs’ about it because the Paris Yiddish Center Medem Library and the Other Music Academy are joining forces to present the ‘Yiddish Marathon’, a whole week Yiddish program. Simply put, it will be a week of living in Yiddish through lectures, beach excursions and a variety of other activities. The inaugural week will take place from the 27th of December 2018 to the 3rd of January 2019.

The Bashevis Singers
What do you get when you add a brother, a sister, a cousin and a few instruments together? You get the Bashevis Singers, a new Yiddish Indie band from Melbourne, Australia. The band consists of Husky Gawenda, Gideon Preiss (both well known for their critically acclaimed indie band, Husky) and Evie Gawenda. Together, they weave classic Yiddish songs with a modern folk sound, bringing a new interpretation of said classics into the world for our enjoyment.
The moving harmonies the trio perform are so beautiful, it’s as if it’s a part of their DNA. This comes as no surprise, given renowned journalist and poet, Michael Gawenda, is their father and uncle. Their debut album, sharing the name of their band, includes two new songs penned by Gawenda himself.
Many of the songs on the Bashevis Singers’ debut album have become hits with kids and teens, particularly ‘Tayere Malke’, ‘Tumbalalayke’ and ‘Der Alter Nusnboym’.
The album can be purchased through their website or on iTunes.
If you want to hear them live, I recommend booking tickets to their album launch and you can find the details below.
